Pahrump Utility Company, Inc. (PUCI) is a locally owned and operated utility providing high quality water and wastewater services to the South end of Pahrump Nevada.It was founded by Tim Hafen, his son Greg Hafen, and daughter Vicki Hafen Scott in 1995. They started providing wastewater services in 1998 and water services in 2002. In 2006, Tim’s Grandson, Gregory Hafen II, joined the management team full time. Today, PUCI is managed by 3 generations of the Hafen Family. Tim moved to Pahrump on July 2, 1951 and began farming a part of the Kellogg Ranch. He applied for 2 well permits and drilled the first well in 1951, it flowed artesian water at 1040 gallons per minute. Then, when enough money was available, the second well was drilled in 1957 and it flowed 800 gallons of artesian water per minute.
Tim put these wells to beneficial use by farming cotton and alfalfa for 50 years.
In 1951 Pahrump was a very small town with only a few farm families. Cotton made the Pahrump Valley. In 1963, due to the irrigation pumping, there was enough horsepower demand to attract an electric coop. Then telephones arrived in 1965. The first telephone book had 76 subscribers. A copy of the first edition of the telephone book hangs on the wall at the utility’s office. Pahrump finally had the ingredients to start a town.
As time went by and the town grew, farming was replaced with land development and there became a need for water and wastewater services. The farming wells and associated water rights were converted to municipal and are being used to serve customers in the South end of the Pahrump valley.
